Hiking Mt. Washington was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. I hiked with J and M up the trail I usually take students to Lowe’s and we then went up the Nelson Crag Trail.
Nelson Crag was one of the most fun trails I climbed on so far. I loved climbing up and up and up the tall rocks into the alpine zone. Reaching the Auto-Road was definitely a highlight, and at the same time very out-of-place once we got there.
The three of us had lunch just before we reached Nelson’s Crag and we noticed all of the flowers that the alpine zone had to offer.
Summitting Washington felt like the pinnacle of my time here in New Hampshire. It represented overcoming all of the stress and obstacles of my new job and of my new lifestyle. I’m glad I undertook the challenge of climbing the tallest mountain on the east coast, now everything should be downhill compared to this.
Once we reached the top we let out our “barbaric yawp”.
“I too am not a bit tamed–I too am untranslatable;
I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.” – Walt Whitman
